About Us
By SUE WADE Sun Correspondent
Activity on the corner of Punta Gorda’s W. Marion Avenue and U.S. 41 southbound has taken a distinctly old-timey turn. One day, you swear, a horse and buggy are going to tie up in the parking lot.
The three historic buildings there are alive with new energy from a crew of local shopkeepers — “an all-woman tribe,” as Jayne Goddard, one of the owners, calls them.
IN WHICH SHORTY AND JAYNE BECOME PROPRIETESSES
Sheryl “Shorty” and husband Dave “Big Sexy” Peters’ 12-year-old Punta Gorda pub, Shorty’s Place, are local legend.
Everybody knows the 4-foot, 9-inch, Arkansas-born barkeep who has braids nearly as long as she is and signs off messages with a cheeky “AMF.”
What they might not know is that she has retail cred, which led her to open an honest-to-God mercantile, mid-pandemic, on W. Marion Avenue. Shorty’s shop was taken out, not by COVID, but by Hurricane Ian.
Its new home perfectly fits its definition:
mer·can·tile (n.) dated General store, sometimes with a false front, multi-paned glass windows and a front porch, carrying assorted groceries, dry goods, hardware, clothing and other necessities in tall shelves up to the ceiling; often, a social gathering spot with living quarters above.
